Die drei Fernwanderwege Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail und der Continental Divide Trail bilden in den USA die sogenannte ‚Triple Crown of Hiking‘.

 

Der Appalachian Trail (AT) …              

… ist mit rund 3.500 km der kürzeste Trail der Triple Crown, verläuft im Osten der USA von Georgia nach Maine, durchzieht 14 US-Staaten und durchquert die Appalachen, eines der ältesten Gebirge der Welt.
Er ist sehr gut markiert und durch viele Versorgungspunkte charakterisiert, so dass die Verpflegung kein Problem auf diesem Weg darstellt.
Schätzungen zufolge versuchen mehr als 2.000 Hiker pro Jahr einen ‚thruhike‘ (= die gesamte Strecke wird in einem Stück zurückgelegt) dessen Abschluss von Hikern scherzhaft mit dem ‚undergraduate-degree‘ (Bachelor Abschluss) gleichgesetzt wird.

Der Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)…
… entspricht dagegen dem ‚masters program‘ (Masterstudiengang).

Die Fakten:

• längere Strecke  von 4.200 km
• kürzeres Zeitfenster für einen ‚thruhike‘ (aufgrund der Wetter- und Schneebedingungen in Frühjahr und Herbst)
• größere klimatische Unterschiede (Wüste bis Alpin)
• größere Höhenlagen
• der Trail ist weniger gut markiert
• es gibt deutlich weniger Versorgungspunkte
• es sind lange Strecken fern ab der Zivilisation zurückzulegen
• ca. 400 Hiker versuchen sich jährlich an einem ‚thruhike‘ – und dies mit steigender Anzahl seit der Veröffentlichung des Buches ‚Wild‘ von Cheryl Strayed, das mittlerweile mit Reese Witherspoon in der Hauptrolle verfilmt wurde (‚Der große Trip – Wild‘)

 

Der Continental Divide Trail (CDT)…

…  stellt schließlich den ‚doctorate‘ (Doktorgrad) dar.

Die Fakten:

• mit rund 5.000 km ist er der längste Trail der ‚Triple Crown‘
• weniger als 200 Hiker versuchen jährlich einen ‚thruhike‘
• der Trail ist noch nicht fertiggestellt d.h. einzelne Abschnitte fehlen, stellenweise existiert kein vorgegebener Pfad, die Markierungen sind schlecht oder gar nicht vorhanden
• dieser Trail erfordert bessere Navigationskenntnisse
• kurzes Zeitfenster für einen ‚thruhike‘ (aufgrund der Wetter- und Schneebedingungen in Frühjahr und Herbst)
• Versorgungspunkte sind selten und weiter entfernt
• größere klimatische Unterschiede (Wüste bis Alpin)
• größere Höhenlagen
• es sind lange Strecken fern ab der Zivilisation zurückzulegen

In the U.S. the three long-distance trails Appalachian Trail,  Pacific Crest Trail  and the Continental Divide Trail form the so-called ‚Triple Crown of Hiking‘.

 

The Appalachian Trail (AT) …

… with approximately 3.500 kilometers is the shortest trail of the Triple Crown. It runs in the east of the United States from Georgia to Maine, travels through 14 U.S.-states and traverses the Appalachian Mountains, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.

It is very well marked and characterized by many supply points, so resupplying  is not a big problem on this trail. More than 2.000 hikers per year try to ‚thruhike‘ the AT (= they try to hike the AT in one season).

The conclusion of this trail is jokingly equated with the so called ‚undergraduate-degree‘.

 

The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) …

… in comparison to that, corresponds to the ‚masters program‘.

The facts:

• longer distance  of 4.200 km
• shorter time window for a ‚thruhike‘ (due to the weather and snow conditions in spring and autumn)
• bigger climatic differences (desert to alpine)
• higher altitudes
• the trail is less well marked
• much less supply points
• you have to hike long distances far away from civilization
• around 400 hiker each year try a ‚thruhike‘ –  and this number increases since the publication of the book ‚Wild‘ by Cheryl Strayed, which has now been made into a movie (‚Wild‘) with Reese Witherspoon in the lead role.

 

The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) …

… finally represents the ‚doctorate‘.

The facts:

• with 5.000 km it is the longest trail of the ‚Triple Crown‘
• less than 200 Hiker per year try a ‚thruhike‘
• the trail is not completed yet, that means individual sections are still missing, sometimes there is no predetermined path, the markings are poor or non-existent
• this trail requires better navigation skills
• there is just a short time window for a ‚thruhike‘ (due to weather and snow conditions in spring and autumn)
• supply points are less common and  further away
• bigger climatic differences (desert to alpine)
• higher altitudes
• you have to hike long distances far away from civilization
