Day 93 – 16. Feb: Anakiwa (41 km/ Total 1678 km)
After a great night we are ready for a long track. Because the Queen Charlotte Track is a pretty easy hike, with just some up and downs, we decide, close to the days end, to continue hiking into the night.
Doing this has given us a great opportunity. Now we finally get to see the glow worms. These are pretty cool to see at night. They look like little wooden sticks with a bulb at the end and if you turn off the headlamp it looks like Christmas string lights. We stop a couple times at several places, in the pitch dark just to enjoy (Maria: and they are actually real worms, not like the ‚Glühwürmchen‘ in Germany, which are beetles). And we see more Possums. Alive, not hanging dead out of the traps. One is just running away in front of us on the trail before finally hiding in the bushes. Accidentally I even hit one, that was on the ground, with my trekking pole. I was just walking with my pole to the side and WHAM … right on his body – Oops 😦 , sorry little possum!
With the end of our day we try to find camp, but it’s to dark to find a spot. So we sleep just in the information shelter in Anakiwa.
